Author Jean Holloway - Talked to Her Live on Blog Talk Radio!

This talk radio show was live on the air at 8:00 p.m. tonight and I actually got a chance to talk to Jean Holloway! I have never done anything like that before.  At first I logged in with Skype and that wasn't working and I wasn't sure how to work it.  I called in with my cell and got through. I was kind of at a loss for words.  I had no idea what to say other than the fact that I love Jean Holloway's books, which I didn't actually say out loud!  I'm just so excited that I actually talked to her.  It was a great radio show.  The 3rd book in this series (Deuces Wild) is out and I am expecting it in the mail soon.  I found out that she has a fourth book coming out next year!

Review of Through the Heart by Kate Morgenroth

Through the Heart

From the bestselling author of They Did It with Love, a chance meeting ignites romance and results in murder

Nora and Timothy have lives that are worlds apart. Nora lives in a small Kansas town, living paycheck to paycheck, working in a coffee shop. Timothy lives in Manhattan, responsible to no one and nothing except managing his family's millions. When these two meet, it seems like the beginning of a fairy tale. Except Nora is not your typical damsel in distress, Timothy does not quite fit the role of a gallant prince, and fairy tales don't include a dead body.

As Nora and Timothy take turns telling their sides of the story, the reader is caught in the net of their love, and the chilling murder that results. With big questions of love, fidelity, filial responsibility and the role of fate, Through the Heart is a page-turning love story with a jaw dropping twist readers won't soon forget.

My thoughts:
I had a little trouble getting into this book at first, but I was glad I stuck with it!  It ended up being a pretty quick read.

Nora worked in a coffee shop named Starbox, not to be confused with Starbucks.  Her best friend is Tammy.  Tammy seemed to have a gift of predicting the future.  Every prediction that Tammy made for Nora was right on. She was never wrong.

Nora lives at home with her mom who has cancer.  She does everything for her mom and feels guilty going anywhere, so she usually stays home with her mom.  Her mom seems like such a baby.  She seems to guilt her into staying with her all the time.  Nora needs to get out and have her own life.

Nora meets Timothy at her job.  He is not from her town but is just visiting.  Nora doesn't go out with him much and doesn't tell him about her mom and why she can't go out.  He wants her to go back to his hometown to visit, but she doesn't want to leave her mother alone.

This book goes back and forth from Nora's point of view to Timothy's.  I like this aspect of the book.  It's nice to see what two people are thinking about the same situation.

In the end, Tammy makes a prediction that Nora really should have believed, because it came true and I didn't like what happened.

Review of Eye for an Eye by Dwayne S. Joseph

Eye For An Eye

5.0 of 5 stars5.0 of 5 stars5.0 of 5 stars5.0 of 5 stars5.0 of 5 stars 5.00

Paperback, 288 pages
Published October 1st 2010 by Urban Books

Lisette, the flawless beauty with the take no-prisoners attitude is back! Along with her partners, Marlene and Aida, Lisette ruins marriages at the request of desperate, wealthy wives willing to pay large sums to stick it to their husbands. Control is what it's all about, and that's just what they give back to the wives.
Enter Shante Hunt and Vivian Steele. Shante wants Lisette to set up her brother-in-law to prove to her sister that the man she married is no good. Vivian wants Aida to trap her husband, not so she can get a divorce, but to force him to realize how good he has it at home.
It's business as usual, until Lisette's past comes back to wreak havoc in a major way. Someone is out for revenge, and when Lisette finds out who and why, things for both her and Aida will never be the same.
Sex, suspense, intense drama, and murder . . . Eye for an Eye is an explosive sequel that will leave you with your mouth hanging wide open. This is Dwayne S. Joseph at his best!

My thoughts:
I have been looking forward to reading this book, and I finally got my hands on it! This book was everything I was hoping for and more. I agree that it was explosive and kept me on the edge of my seat and turning the pages until the end!

I have read almost all of Dwayne S. Joseph's books and love every single one of them. This book tops them all. His books just keep getting better and better!

Lisette's trouble started with her father and the way she grew up. She learned how to control men, and got into the business of getting paid for setting men up to prove the women in their life that they are cheating so the women can get what they want from them. She ended up getting set up by Kyra. This book is a sequel to "Home Wrecker" and shows what happened after the setup by Kyra.

This book is hot. Get ready for some steamy sex and hot men. Keep some ice handy to cool you off! Be prepared for the drama and murder. I kept reading faster and faster toward the end to see what was going to happen and my heart was pumping until the end.

Dwayne definitely makes the characters come to life and keeps you wanting to read more of his works!

5 stars!!!

Review of Playing the Hand You're Dealt by Trice Hickman

Playing the Hand You're Dealt

Emily Snow is a gentle, kind-hearted young woman who plays by the rules, makes good decisions, and does all the right things. But her quiet and rather uneventful life soon changes when her mother dies--the only family she had left, leaving her devastated and grief-stricken. Ready to bury her sorrow, and with coaxing from her best friend, Samantha Baldwin, Emily decides to make a fresh start, moving from her hometown of Atlanta, to the power capital of Washington, DC. Wild and bold, she does whatever she wants without a second thought. From her poor choices in bad men, to her tumultuous and strained relationship with her mother, Samantha has always run from truth and straight into trouble. Now, Samantha must tap into an inner-strength she never knew she had, and hold on to a family she realizes is worth fighting for. (less)

My thoughts:

I saw this book on the Black Expressions Blookclub website. It sounded like a great book, so I ordered a copy since it is a newer book.

The cover really caught my eye, a picture of a black woman in kind of a sexy position with a dress cut low in the back and a necklace drapped down. She looks maybe like she is dancing or something or trying to get a man's attention. The woman in the picture is the main character, Emily Snow.

Emily is in love with her friend Samantha's father, but nobody knows, not even Samantha's father. She is sure he doesn't feel the same about her. No man has ever made her feel the way she feels when she is around Samantha's father. Samantha's father's name is Edward and his wife is Brenda. Edward and Brenda really don't have a passionate marriage. They only had sex about once every 4 months. Brenda is all about status and he just wants something more than material things.

Emily moved in with Samantha's family for a time while she was looking for a place of her own. She just had to get out of there. She couldn't stand how hot she felt for Edward when she was around him. She ended up getting her own place and finding a new friend in Ruben who is her neighbor. She finds out that Ruben can see the future, and he has some important news for her that scares her. He sees that someone may die, and she worries that it may be someone she loves. She will be surprised what comes about out of all this.

I kept wondering how Emily could have such strong feelings for a much older man, who is her best friend's father. After getting to know his wife Brenda, I really was hoping that Edward would ditch the bitch and hook up with Emily. Yeah she is young and the best friend of his daughter, but he has to be able to live his life.

I really felt like I got to know the characters and was sad to see the book end!

Reading List

I came up with something new. I have so many books on my shelves and can't decide which book to read, so I went to random.org. I told it to pick a number between 1-26 and each number would represent a letter. Number 21 came up, so that means that I read books with the letter T. I took out all the books with "The" starting the title. Here is what I came up with:
These are my own personal books:

These are the books that I borrowed from my friend Staci

This looks like a good group of books to start with I think.

Review of Hothouse Flower by Margot Berwin

Hothouse Flower

Eat, Pray, Love meets The Orchid Thief in this rollicking debut novel about plant magic, spiritual discovery, and romantic fever in the jungles of Mexico.
Shortly after her divorce, advertising executive Lila Nova purchases her first plant. It’s a bird-of-paradise, and the seller is David Exley, a rugged “country-sexual” who seems to promise a paradise of his own making. Lila is immediately obsessed—with plants and with the man who sells them—but when David introduces her to the myth of the nine plants of desire, and when she meets a man named Armand who claims to own the nine plants, her obsession reaches unexpected heights: if she can possess all nine plants, the legend goes, her wildest dreams will be fulfilled.
But Lila is too trusting, and as a result she is soon off on an adventure she never meant to take: in the Yucatán, alone, hefting a backpack full of travel guides and expensive shampoo, and learning more than she ever wanted to know about the rain forest—and about herself.

Plant mythology, shamans and charlatans, mysterious spirit animals, orchid obsessives, scorpions,
poisonous snakes, and handsome Huichols . . . they’re all here in this tale of mystery, adventure, and
heat—in every sense of the word.
My thoughts:

My friend Staci asked if I wanted to read this book and I said I would. She has to sent it to someone, so I had to get reading it. I thought I would like it from her review, but I wasn't sure.

From the cover it looks kind of like a Better Homes and Gardens kind of book or something. I knew it was about plants, and I was unsure about how plants could be sensual.

Lila finds Exley in a plant stand in town. She ends up buying a bird of paradise plant from him. After that, she sees a plant that really catches her eye outside a laundromat. She walks in and it has a moss floor and plants all around. She finds out there are nine plants of desire in the back room from the owner Armand, and she wants to make it a point to see those plants. She got a cutting of a fire fern from the laundromat, and Exley wanted to know where she got it. She was told not to tell anyone about the nine plants of desire. Lila ends up going on an adventure, and along the way meets Diego.

Each chapter tells of a certain plant and what it's properties are. There is a lot more to plants that I could have imagined. Who knew they could be so sexual too.

I wasn't sure what was going to happen at the end and who Lila was going to side with. I wasn't sure who was telling the truth, but she did what was right and I was happy with how the story ended.

Hot House Flower by Margot Berwin P.9

After the death of my marriage, I was hell-bent on keeping the bird-of-paradise alive. I would take it slowly. Plants first. And if everything went well, then I'd move on to people.
