Vacation by Jeremy C. Shipp

Published: April 10th 2007 by Raw Dog Screaming Press
Paperback, 164 pages
From Goodreads:It's time for blueblood Bernard Johnson to leave his boring life behind and go on The Vacation, a yearlong corporate-sponsored odyssey. But instead of seeing the world, Bernard is captured by terrorists, becomes a key figure in secret drug wars, and, worse, doesn't once miss his secure American Dream.
I got a PDF version of the book. I could not get into it at all. I got up to 30 some pages and just did not get it at all. I gave it 1 star.

Caught by Harlan Coben

Published: March 23rd 2010 by Dutton Adult (first published January 1st 2010)
Hardcover: 400 pages

From Goodreads:
An explosive new stand-alone thriller from #1 New York Times bestseller Harlan Coben.
Wendy is a reporter on a mission: She's chasing down the lowest of the low-sexual predators-and exposing them on national television. Her big break comes when she nails a child advocate who works with abused and underserved children. She's there, cameras rolling, when the cops cuff him and the guy realizes his life is well and truly over.
Three months later, the perp is off the grid, missing and presumed dead after the father of a victim claims to have killed him. Wendy, proud to have taken the man down in front of a shocked television audience, has moved on to the story of a missing girl, Erin, in a nearby suburb. The whole country is obsessed with finding this child, and Wendy should be well on her way to journalistic superstardom.
Then is all comes unhinged: Wendy gets a phone call that changes everything. A group of local fathers, out of work and not above vigilante justice, begins to take matters into their own hands on Erin's behalf. Secrets long-buried rise to the surface and Wendy begins to wonder if her assumptions that fateful night three months ago were based on solid investigative journalism-or if she has unwittingly been part of a grand manipulation aiming to destroy an innocent man.

It took well over a week for me to read this book. Dan was in trouble for talking sexually to a 13 year old girl online. He wants to meet with Wendy who is a reporter because he claims he was set up. Haley McWaid was missing and her cell phone was found in Dan's hotel room. There were many people involved in what went on in this book. I thought this book was pretty slow and it was just okay. I gave it 2 out of 5 stars.

My New Tattoo!

I went to a tattoo party yesterday and got a new tattoo!
I knew I wanted butterflies, but I wasn't exactly sure of the design. Another lady came in with this butterfly design I really liked. There ended up being 3 of us that liked the same design, but we all put our own twist on it. I was the only one that had a dragonfly. I was going to put a butterfly for my husband, but Nicole (tattoo artist and my cousin) said maybe he would rather have a dragonfly, and I decided that was good. I Decided to do birth colors for everyone. Meredith is aquamarine, Elizabeth is Emerald, and Mike is PERIDOT but he also likes orange, so I had some orange put into the dragonfly. Mine is opal or Pink Tourmaline. I like pink so that it what I decided on. I never realized before yesterday that everyone else in my family has a greenish color birthstone but me! I wanted names put on, but they had me look at it first to make sure, and yes I still wanted names.
I have one other tattoo which is dolphins circling my ankle. I don't remember it hurting as much as yesterday's hurt, but it was a lot bigger tattoo too. My husband was surprised I got such a big tattoo, but I figured if I am going to do it I am going to go big!
I think Nicole did a great job, and will definately call her when I want my next one! One of the girls got her butterflies on her upper thigh and another on her calf. The first person got an angel on her shoulder.

(MY RATING 5 OUT OF 5!)

Paperback, 250 pages

I loved this book! The author was right, it is very deep!

Randy is engaged to Monique. He was with Tina before Monique. Tina had stopped taking her birth control pills because she thought they caused cancer, so Jalisa was born. He let Monique know right away about Jalisa because he didn't want to have any secrets. Tina was awful to Monique and Randy went to get custody of he and Tina's daughter Jalisa, which he got except she got Jalisa for 4 months out of the year. Monique got fed up with Randy because Tina kept calling him and he just won't put her in her place, so Monique leaves. In the meantime, Tina visits him and wants to start something with him, and then Monique walks in on them. Randy swears there is nothing going on, but can Monique forgive him?

Abe's fooling around on his wife Nakyia with Taki (who is his boss). Nakyia was a nerve disorder that causes pain in her face. He knew what he was doing was wrong, but he missed being intimate with his wife so Taki gave him what he needed. Taki is starting to get feelings for him and he didn't want that. He is still in love with his wife and doesn't want to end his marriage, he just wants to have his wife and then have Taki for the sex. That was all it was supposed to ever be. Taki wonders where they are going with their relationship. He said it was never supposed to be like that . She said they are both unhappy in their marriages so why not be together. They are supposed to be together with no strings attached and no expectations. Taki is married to Whilice, but he wasn't as skilled as Abe in bed. She came home one night and Whilice wanted to have sex, but she had just gotten home from having sex with Abe and wanted to wash up first. He smelled cologne on her and she said she stopped at the mall and tried on samples. You will have to read the book to find out if Taki and Abe become more than fuck partners or what happens with them.

Travis is gay, and his father wants nothing to do with him because of that fact. He ends up meeting up with a married man named Paul. His brother Randy knew about Paul, but didn't know that he was married. Travis wanted Paul to come out of the closet and just be with him. Travis found out something surprising about Paul and there is a major twist in this story.

You will not be disappointed if you decide to read this book, and you should read it! Can't wait to read another book by this author!

If Your Girl Only Knew by Dwayne S. Joseph

If Your Girl Only Knew by Dwayne S. Joseph
Published September 1st 2006 by Urban Books (first published 2005)
Paperback, 288 pages

From Goodreads: It's been six years since David Cray and Jocelyn Alvarez laid eyes on each other. Their bitter breakup, caused by David's infidelity, left Jocelyn angry and David filled with regrets. But a chance meeting in Philadelphia spurs them to get back together, and it's soon obvious that the feelings they thought were dead and buried are as strong as ever. But there's a problem with this romantic reunion - two problems in fact. David is engaged to Janelle, and Jocelyn is married to Eric. And now, two people desperate to keep the love they've rediscovered will have to decide how much they're willing to give up to be together.

Wow that was a great book. It was so full of drama. You should see the book now that I am done. I have marked all of the parts I want to remember when doing a review and I have 40 spots marked. I can definately see the growth of the author since his earlier book.

First of all I have to say that I enjoy reading his Acknowledgments. He really shows his appreciation for everyone in his life his family, his readers and specific book clubs.

Each chapter in this book goes from person to person and what is going on in that person's life. It is interesting to hear the point of view of each of the characters. David was a writer and he was supposed to be working on his book, but he e-mailed Jocelyn since he had run into her not long before. He and Jocelyn were together 6 years prior, but he cheated on her, so they broke up. He is engaged now, but still has feelings for her. She is married too.

David and Jocelyn decided to meet and just see what happens. David's friend Marc agrees to cover for him so he can get away for the weekend. Meanwhile Jocelyn's husband Eric surprises her with candles and a romantic setting at home, and he told her he wants to start a family. She gets upset at him because they have both been distant and now all of a sudden he decides he wants to start a family. They met up at the hotel and they kissed. (P79) "I couldn't remember the last time a kiss evoked such hunger within me. My skin tingled with excitement. I wanted him." They ended up meeting with each other quite often.

Janelle and David were so distant with each other, that he didn't even notice the signs that she was pregnant. One day he left his laptop and forgot to shut it down.. I won't give any more of the story, but both couples go through a lot to find out where in life they really want to be or not be.

There was a very surprising event towards the end that almost made me cry. These people all went through so much. There was no way that David could have gone on not knowing what might have been if he didn't meet up with Jocelyn. He could have just kept going on with his life the way it was, but he would never have truly been happy--same with Jocelyn. They didn't end up maybe where they thought they would be, but they found out where they needed to be.

On page 96 the author says "She had the kind of figure men loved--large breasts, wide hips, and a rear end to sit on". (I wish this is what men really loved!)

If you haven't read any books by Dwayne S. Joseph yet, then you should. He is an amazing author. I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars!

Never Say Never by Dwayne S. Joseph

Never Say Never by Dwayne S. Joseph
Published September 1st 2005 by Urban Books
255 Pages

This is a story of three friends and all of the drama and man troubles that they are having.

Ressa wants to have a baby before she is 35. She is with Simon but he is just an asshole. She is afraid of being alone. She just gets tired of his shit and tells him to pack and get out. They end up together again but then he says (p92) "Shit, other than you paying my bills, the only thing you really been good for is fucking. And you ain't even the bomb at that. That's why I get straightened out every now and then by Cecilia." On page 115 she was talking about shaking her rear end to "Just Got Paid" by Johnny Kemp. (I remember that song and love that song!).
Erica is looking for a man. She hooked up with Dominic, he had a body but he was terrible in bed. He claimed to be a little rusty but Erica told him (P23)"A little rusty? Please, your shit is broken. Now get the fuck off me." Then Kenny came back around. Kenny was in her life before, but he cheated on her and had a baby with another woman and she wants nothing to do with him. While they were apart, he wrote a book dedicated to her. He will not give up until he has her back.

Carmen is with Anthony and he is just a pig. He wanted her to dye her hair blonde to look like Shakira and he told her that she was not at fine as Shakira was. He even went so far as to book her an appointment at the salon! She couldn't believe it and said (P37) "Hell no, I won't chill out! How would you like it if I pulled some shit like this? How would you like it if I said, 'Anthony, I think your dick is too small. Here's an appointment card to go and get it enlarged so you can be just as big as my ex!" Carmen ends up spending a lot of time with her co-worker Jordan. Jordan likes a lot of the same things that she does such as salsa music and books. Anthony's mom is so mean to Carmen and he never sticks up for her.

You will have to read this book to see how their lives end up. I absolutely loved this book from beginning to end and I was so hooked. I am still amazed at how great of a job Dwayne writes from a woman's point of view and makes the characters come alive! I had to stay up late and finish this book to see how everyone's lives turned out. Those men in this book really pissed me off sometimes! He is right "Never say Never"!

I gave this 5 stars!

Simply Irresistible by Rachel Gibson

Simply Irresistible by Rachel Gibson

Published: December 1st 1998 by Avon

Paperback, 384 pages

Georgeanne Howard left her husband at the altar. He was a much older, rich man. She was rescued by hockey player John Kowalsky. After he rescued her, he found out that she was running away from her wedding with the owner of the hockey team that he played on. He didn't want to get mixed up with her because he didn't want to get cut from the team. He didn't have to worry because Georgeanne had no interest in him either. Even though they both seemed to hate each other, they ended up having wild sex the night that he rescued her. He asked if she was on birth control and she told him yes, even though she had just started it. The next day, John acted like nothing happened between them. He booked her a flight home and just dropped her off at the airport without a second glance. He told her that he wasn't going to risk his position with the Chinooks for her.

Georgeanne ended up in a catering business and was doing really good for herself. Seven years after "that night" Georgeanne was catering a hospital fundraiser and never expected to run into John there. He couldn't believe it was really her. He talked to her, but she got a little flustered and dropped her purse and ended up leaving her checkbook behind. He picked it up and thought he would mail it to her, but ended up dropping it off at her house. He was surprised when a little girl answered the door and even let him in. He got looking at her and realized that it was his daughter!

Their daughter Lexi was six years old. She was so cute. Here is one of the quotes when she was talking to John(P243) "Do you gots any games, John?" Lexie asked holding her chin in her hands. Her hair had been braided down the back and she wore a little purple nightgown, "Like Candy Land or somethin?"

Georgeanne felt that John made her feel more alive than she has felt in a long time. John really wanted to be a part of Lexi's life. He always wanted kids and now he has one, but being with Georgeanne would end his career, as his was given a choice--the team or the woman.

The end was happy and I am so glad I read this. I was worried that it would have a lot of hockey talk in it, but it didn't.

I gave it 5 stars!

Library Loot - June 5

I know I just did a library loot a few days ago, but I had some more books waiting for me from MELCAT and here they are:

In too Deep by Dwayne S. Joseph

From Goodreads:
Brothers Randy, Abe and Travis Lincoln's lives couldn't be any different.

Randy's got baby momma drama that's driving him nuts. Abe's having an affair with his boss, while his wife suffers with daily pain. Travis is struggling with his all-too-frequent trips to the hospital due to his boyfriend's violent outbursts.

Different lives. Different paths. How can brothers stick together when they hate and love each other all at the same time?

Never Say Never by Dwayne S. Joseph

From Goodreads:
With her high-powered career in order, Reesa's ready to settle down and have a baby before her thirty-fifth birthday-but her current man is definitely not up to the job. With time running out, should she try to train him for the starring role, or go in search of a new Mr. Right?

Carmen has always catered to Anthony's needs-and put up with plenty of grief from his irritating mother. But when a smooth, fine older man comes along and offers to give Carmen everything she desires, she's finally ready to give in to temptation. Will an unexpected pregnancy ruin everything?

Erica is so fed up with shallow brothers that she's stopped looking for love. Just when she's found her groove, settling for occasional dates and one-night stands, her ex comes back into her life in a major way. Will he put her through the emotional wringer all over again?

These three women know that life and love aren't easy, but they never expected drama like this.

If Your Girl Only Knew by Dwayne S. Joseph

From Goodreads:
It's been six years since David Cray and Jocelyn Alvarez laid eyes on each other. Their bitter breakup, caused by David's infidelity, left Jocelyn angry and David filled with regrets. But a chance meeting in Philadelphia spurs them to get back together, and it's soon obvious that the feelings they thought were dead and buried are as strong as ever. A Thousand Cuts by Simon Lelic

From Goodreads:
A stunning debut novel that unravels the hidden story behind a school shooting

It should be an open-and-shut case. Samuel Szajkowski, a recently hired history teacher, walked into a school assembly with a gun and murdered three students and a colleague before turning the weapon on himself. It was a tragedy that could not have been predicted. Szajkowski, it seems clear, was a psychopath beyond help. Yet as Detective Inspector Lucia May- the only woman in her high-testosterone office in the Criminal Investigations Department-begins to piece together the testimonies of the various witnesses, an uglier and more complex picture emerges, calling into question the innocence of others. But no one, including Lucia's boss, is interested.

As the pressure to close the case builds and her colleagues' sexism takes a sinister turn, Lucia begins to realize that she has more in common with the killer than she could have imagined, and she becomes determined to expose the truth. Brilliantly interweaving the witnesses' accounts with Lucia's own perspective, A Thousand Cuts is a narrative tour de force from a formidable new voice in fiction.

Samuel, who was a new history teacher at the school, went into an assembly and killed three students and a co-worker before shooting himself. Samuel was a victim in this story. He was called names by students, someone shit in his briefcase, and he was just plain bullied by students. He tried going to the headmaster, but didn't get anywhere. The headmaster told him that he is a teacher and needs to maintain order and that he should not be intimidated by students. He was pretty much just blown off.

Lucia is a detective inspector in this case and she said the school should have stopped the bullying. She said the school is accountable for what happened. She felt sorry for Samuel. She felt like he was driven to do what he did.

Maggie was going out with Samuel, but then things didn't last between them. Maggie started going out with another co-worker TJ. He smacks her ass in the staff room right in front of Samuel. Samuel was in love with Maggie still and he couldn't stand to watch that.

Also, the students started a blog and they made it look like it was written by Samuel. They wrote about how he was in the hospital and how he was worrying that when one of the students pulled down his pants that he had "skid marks" in them and things like that. Even the teachers were reading the blog.

P. 204"There is plenty of blame to go around Mr. Travis. The simple fact is that you could have acted to prevent what happened but you did not. More than that, you were obliged to act. You knew -- you know -- about the bullying that goes on in this school. You know who the victims are and which children, which teachers, are responsible."

I think this book has an important message. Bullying is not something to be taken lightly, even when it is an adult that is being bullied.

I am glad I read this book.I gave it 3 stars because I liked it, but it is kind of in interview style and sometimes I wasn't sure who was being interviewed.
