Guest Post - Steve DeWinter - 7/14/11

Steve DW Author

The life of a writer is glamourous and carefree! Or is that connected and involved?

What is the first thought that comes to mind when you think of the writer hard at work on their great American novel? For me, I always pictured a man sitting on a hard wooden chair as he hunched over his manual typewriter in a cabin by some picturesque mirror smooth lake.

So here I am.

The writer.

Its what I have been working so hard to become.

And its not what I expected it would be like at all.

No cabin by the lake (too bad). No hard wooden chair (thank goodness). And my manual typewriter replaced with an iPod Touch and Wireless Apple Keyboard (much better for me.

I couldn't commit to the first words I typed anyway).

There is another thing I forgot to mention. The writer always took a year or more to write each book. And they wrote in isolation as they crafted their next great masterpiece.

A lot has changed.

With a website, email, Facebook and Twitter, I can't even pretend to write in isolation. I am in constant contact with my readers, both current and future. In the past, the writer could only hope to connect with readers while on the occasional book tour. Today, I connect with readers on a daily basis.

I love my readers, I truly do. I am able to be involved in their daily lives beyond just reading my fiction, and that is exciting and liberating.

And I wouldn't have it any other way.

Steve’s debut thriller is Inherit The Throne.

  3. I think it is a plus that authors can be in contact with their readers so much easier because of social networks!! I had no clue you could hook up a wireless keyboard for an iTouch!!
