Review of Domestic by Nikkea Smithers

Domestic by Nikkea Smithers
I just finished "Domestic" and that is one awesome book. That book really brought out a lot of emotions. I really felt sorry for Jamal the way Monica would treat him at the beginning of the book.
Truth be told, he was late picking her up because he had been across town putting his resume in at a potential employer.  She wouldn't see it that way even if he told her.  She never did.  She only saw what she wanted to see and at the moment, that was him being late. (p.5)
Jamal wasn't a perfect man.  He definitely had issues:
It was too late.  She had laid her hands on him.  He jumped up gripping her by the shoulders slamming her into the wall.  His eyes turned a shade of amber red that frightened her. "You want to die tonight?" was the first response that Jamal had made all evening.  Animosity grew inside of him that he could not immediately relate to.  It was as though he was looking out of himself and someone else was becoming this violent beast. (p.7)
I know you wonder how I could feel sorry for a man that does something like that.  I know what he did wasn't right, but he was trying and she just didn't see it.  You will have to read the book to see why I really felt sorry for him.
Monica is Jamal's wife.  She loved Jamal but hated him at the same time.  I can see her point of view too.  It had to be hard to have a husband that wasn't working and all he did was want to drink.  She is just such a nag though.  Jamal tries and she doesn't even notice.
I personally know the effects that being unemployed has on a person.  It is rough.  You feel so down that you don't have a job and can't provide for your family like you know you can.  It's frustrating when you put in application after application and nobody seems to want you.  This issue is very real and unfortunately, too many people are experiencing this.  I am lucky and never had issues of physical abuse in my life though.
Simone is their daughter.  She had her own issues too, growing up was hard watching the way her parents acted.   She seems destined to go down the same road that her parents were on.  She meets a boy  named Stanley.  She takes him home to meet her parents and they  see he is more of a man than a boy.  Simone and Stanley have their own drama in this book as well.  As far as Simone and Stanley, I almost cried for her. I swear I had tears in my eyes. I loved the poems in the book too.
Nikkea Smithers did an awesome job writing this book and it honestly could not have been any better!

Review of Mack's Revenge...All Hell Breaks Loose by Daddy Rich

THIS IS WHAT'S UP!! - READ THIS BOOK AND YOU WILL SEE!

Before you read this book, you should visit the author's website at: www.gangsta-lit.com.  There you will find out a little about the author and his background.  He is also starting up an online magazine at urbanimagemagazine.com.  I was lucky enough to be selected as a blogger for this magazine.  My first post is to be my review of his book, and here it is!  I just want to let you know that I was not paid to write this review and was not influenced whatsoever on my review.  I read the book and I am telling what I feel.
If you want to read a real life gangster book, then you need to go out and get this book!  It drops on 1-1-11.  Go to the author's website listed above and buy this book!

This is the story of "Big Mac" whose real name is Richard D McVickers.   Big Mac is a rapper, a real estate agent and a drug dealer.

I got 8 kids 6 baby mommas - 1 baby by each - and I got 2 stepsons with my wife Tanisha.  I love them niggaz as my own.  (p.2)

Richard "Big Mac" gets locked up and is held for attempted murder, criminal confinement, obtruction of justice, intimidation with a deadly weapon, and tampering with a state’s witness, (p.72). When he is being questioned, Detective Reece asked him about the Mexican's he has been dealing drugs with up north and he says

"Look, the dude’s name Up North is Kristopher - with a K- older white dude in his fifties. Pale, fat as hell with a white beard. I only met him once,” I said. “O.K. Kristopher what? What’s his full name?” “Kris um, Kringle, Kristopher Kringle.” “I thought your connection was Mexican. Kris Kringle sounds English or something. Sounds familiar, though. How does it all work; what’s the operation?  (p.79)
"Reese’s nostrils flared. “You made me look like a damn fool! Santa Claus? You tell me you been getting dope from Santa Claus?” I don’t like being laughed at.” He threw his interview notes at me. (p.82)

As you can see, there is a lot of humor in this book.  I was laughing out loud in some spots!

Meanwhile, his girlfriend Becky is out shopping and spending Mac's money.  He calls her and needs bail money.  He acts all fine about her spending money, and she thinks  he is  going to be pissed.  He is pissed, but he needs her to bail him out and take care of his business.  Becky seems like all she cares about is Mac's money.  Yeah, Mac got himself into some trouble.  If she is gonna be with him, she needs to support him.

Oh yeah, and there is some hot and heavy sex too.

"Y’all ain’t gonna believe what happened next! This bitch walked around her desk, sat on it, spread her legs wide open, and snapped her fingers and pointed to her pussy (p.94)"

I was glad that his sister introduced him to her friend Tanisha.  Tanisha seemed like a sweet girl and Mac really liked her.  He had a lot of women, but I really felt in my heart that Tanisha was the one for him and he would always be true to her. Tanisha

You need to read this book to find out what goes down, but I have to tell you that Mac gets locked up again and was set up by the drug task force.  It pisses me off that he was set up.  He was locked up in 2005 and is still locked up to this day.  He was convicted of a crime that he was never actually charged with. This is a true life story (except for him killing anyone and escaping).  He really wants to get across to the readers that he knows that he made some bad choices and drugs are not the way to go, but there are some people out there that just will do anything to better themselves, even if it means setting someone up to benefit themselves.

I loved the writing.  It's totally a gangster book and he doesn't try and change the wording.  He says it like it is.  This book really opened my eyes to the gangster world.  The sex scenes were off the chain!

I really hope that he can get out and be with his wife and kids and get his rap career rolling!

5 out of 5 diamonds!

Go out and get this book!
Awesome book!

Quirky Brown Reading Challenge 2011

I am going to try the Quirky Brown Reading Challenge 2011.  This will be my first reading challenge for 2011.  This has been started by Brown Girl Speaks.

Here is what she says on her blog:

This challenge was inspired by a blog post on New Model Minority. The post talked about the hyper-marginalization of Black fiction and included a short but intriguing list of books. That list, or at least the authors on it, were begging to be part of a reading challenge. So, I bring you the Quirky Brown Reading Challenge. This challenge is more than about finishing a certain number of books, but about challenging the overly subscribed to depictions of the so-called “Black experience”. I hope participants also discover some of our lesser known contributions to American literature.

Quirky Brown Fiction List

This is an ever expanding list of Black fiction deemed "quirky" for its uncharacteristic or atypical depiction of a Black experience.

The person that you need to call to get one of these shirts is Jason Frost.  He manages the coolest bookstore ever, Russo’s Books in Bakersfield, California. Domestic by Nikkea Smithers

Well maybe trying isn't enough, when are you going to do something about your situation.

I've been trying to Monica, just like I didn't want to start an argument with you, but you persist.  You are starting to become an old nag.  You don't make me feel like a man and maybe I'm getting tired of it.

Review of Keeping Secrets and Telling Lies by Trice Hickman

Keeping Secrets and Telling Lies

Paperback, 285 pages
Published June 23rd 2009 by Platinum Books (first published June 22nd 2009)
From Goodreads:
What would you do if the secret you were keeping could set you free...yet ultimately devastate the ones you love?...Victoria and Ted are the ultimate power couple. She's a beautiful, business savvy sister who owns one of Atlanta's most sought after event planning companies. He's a powerful, blue-eyed CEO who knows how to take care of business in and out of the boardroom. But their seemingly happy life begins to unravel in the blink of an eye when long-held desires and decades old secrets come back to haunt them!
My thoughts:
This book is a sequel to Unexpected Interruptions.  Ted and Victoria are married and now have a daughter named Alexandria.   They are worried about the race issue and are putting her in a school called Jack and Jill.  Who happens to have a child there?
"When she finally reached the main office and opened the door, she froze in her tracks.  She wanted to believe that she was imagining things, or that she was witnessing a mirage, the result of sleep-deprivation.  But as much as she wanted to dismiss it, she knew what she saw in front of her was real.  Even though his back was turned to her, she knew it was him.  The broad, muscular shoulders, and alluring scent of citrus and spice could only belong to one man.  It was Parker Brightwood, and he was shaking hands with Katie Palmer, the Director of Admissions.  What the hell is he doing here?"  P.35
You will have to read Unexpected Interruptions to find out about Victoria and Parker's previous relationship.    This just makes her life more complicated when he shows back up after all these years.  To make things worse, her best friend Tyler started dating his cousin Samantha.
On top of all that, Ted's mom isn't so well, then he finds out a secret that nobody else but his mom knows.  He isn't sure what to do with the secret.  He is getting all stressed out.
You will have to read this book to see what the secrets and lies are and who had the secrets and lies.  You will be surprised.  It all isn't what you might think from just looking at the cover of the book.
Race plays a big part in this book, and Trice Hickman did a great job with this story making the characters come to life.  My favorite character is Victoria.   In the first book Unexpected Interruptions she began as a single woman and she just was a great woman that I know I would be friends with.  She  continued to be my favorite character in this book.  Although I didn't necessarily agree with some of the things that she did, in the end I was happy with the outcome.  The end almost made me cry.  I really like her friend Tyler too.  He was such a good friend to Victoria and really gave her great advice.
5/5 diamonds
Awesome book!

Disclaimer: Thank you to Trice Hickman for sending me an autographed review copy. I was not compensated for my review. My thoughts on this book were in no way influenced by the author or publicist. They are my personal reflections based solely on MY experience while reading this novel.

Victoria looked away.  Her hidden desires were finally bubbling to the surface.  she let out a slow sigh.  "Denise, this isn't good.  I don't know what I'm going to do."
