Book Review - Beautiful by Kiexiza Rodriquez - October 13, 2011

Synopsis of Beautiful

Tierra Rodriquez, by most people’s standards is living the glamorous life. She is a successful business woman, who has worked her way up the male dominated ladder, at Baxwell Enterprisez, to land as head of the Marketing, Media and Entertainment Department, despite being haunted by ghosts from her past. But while she tries to juggle life, work, friendship, and a new love, Tierra finds her tightly wound cord of lies beginning to unravel for the first time in her adult life.
From trying her hand at love for the first time in her life, to estranged mother showing up at her doorstep, to her best friend laying her own set of secrets in her lap and a confession from her boss that shatters all she's knows so far. Tierra is tested to the brink of sanity and lands in the one place she swore she'd never return seeking solace.

After enduring the tragic death of the one he had searched so long for, Aquarian Skeene is hurt, confused and there is only one person on his mind, Tierra. Desiring to rekindle their lapsed friendship, and make good on a promise, he makes a phone call that’s seems to set off a series of events that takes them both down a path of unfamiliarity and uncertainty. As he tries to settle into his new job, and deal with his own secrets he is thrown into a life and death fight that brings everyone in both of their lives face to face testing not only their endurance but their faith.

With everything they know put on the chopping block on a daily basis, will these two get their act together and figure out what path they are destined to be on? Or will they continue to fall apart and become victims of their own secrets and silent fears?

My Review:
I was the lucky winner of a contest that the author put on for this story. What I had to do was read a little blurb about Tierra and her boss. I had to write what I thought was in the envelope and when she should get the envelope. I was really shocked that I won! Sorry, but I am not going to tell you what was in the envelope! You have to read the story for yourself!

Tierra and Qu were always the best of friends, but things happened and they lost touch. Their friendship was no ordinary one either. They were so close that they called themselves PB&J because she was the peanut butter and he was the jelly. I was glad they finally reconnected. Who is Beautiful you ask? Well she wasn't exactly who I thought she was, but she is the woman in Qu's life. It was actually because of her that Tierra and Qu get reunited.

Tierra had issues with God. She was just so mad at him and would not speak to him. She went to church and heard this message:

"The Lord speaks to each one of us in different ways. He may use your mother, your sister, your child, or even your boss. He might even use an unbeliever. God never said his messages would come in nicely wrapped packages from your pastor," the pastor could be heard saying from inside the packed church. "God doesn't do things the way WE want them done. He does things the way we NEED them done, so he can get out of us what holds us back, what keeps us from him. He wants to help us reach the next level. He sends us what we need, when we need it, in HIS time. We are on his schedule, not the other way around." (Kindle Loc. 1085-90)

I loved this book. Kiexiza Rodriquez did an awesome job with this first book of hers! The characters were great and so was the story. The thing though about this book that really drew me in was the messages about faith. It is so important to bring God into our lives. Sometimes you might wonder if he even answers your prayers, but this is an example of how he really does answer prayers. I recommend this book!

About the Book (from Amazon)

A shocking story of how a simple misconception of one can change a person's life forever. A young lady who thought the world of her husband only to find out he had another side to him that was never revealed.  Gabrielle Johnson had the life she always wanted, a husband, son, friends and family.  The man she loved could do no wrong but she was soon to find out differently. After discovering whom he truly was and set back after set back, she broke free.

Will her experience with that Misconception ruin her future new relationship?

You Tube Video Trailer:

My Review
Gabrielle got into her share of trouble when she was younger.  She ended up moving into an apartment with her dad.  Her sister Dee moved into their grandma's house along with their mom.  Gabrielle became involved with a boy named Tre' .  He seemed like such a nice guy and she couldn't wait to have a future with him.    Boy was she in for a surprise.

Gabrielle turned out to be such a nice young woman, but she just didn't seem to have the self-confidence that she needed.  She just let herself stay in situations that she should not have been in.  She was way too nice to Tre'.    The words that Tre' used to describe Gabrielle--COME ON!  He should have looked in the mirror first because he had no place to talk!  She really should have went with her instincts, but she learned the hard way.

I really enjoyed reading Misconceptions!  It was a page turner and was a quick read. C. Hayes came up with characters that were believable and a scenerio that is all too real.    There were a few typographical errors and spelling errors, but nothing that made the book difficult to read.  I would recommend this book!

Book Review - The Skull Ring by Scott Nicholson - July 30, 2011

The Skull Ring

Kindle Book
Published 2010
Source:  Provided to me for review by Scott Nicholson

About the Book:

Dr. Pamela Forrest is determined to bring Julia's memories to the surface, hoping to heal Julia's panic disorder. The therapist keeps returning Julia to a night twenty-three years ago when Julia was four. A night of hooded figures, strange chants, pain, and blood. The night her father disappeared from the face of the earth.

Julia rebuilds the past a piece at a time during the mind-wrenching therapy sessions. But the line between the past and the present begins to blur. Julia finds a silver skull ring that bears the name "Judas Stone." The same ring had been worn by one of the hooded figures who scarred her both mentally and physically on that long-ago night.

Someone is leaving strange messages inside her house, even though the door is locked. The religious handyman, who has a key, spends a lot of time in the woods behind her house. Her boyfriend Mitchell becomes distant and violent. And the cop who investigated her father's disappearance has followed her to the small Appalachian town of Elkwood.

Now she has a head full of memories, but she doesn't know which are real and which are the creations of Dr. Forrest. The shadows of Julia's panic are growing larger and darker. But succumbing to madness seems safer than heeding the whispers of the master who claims ownership of her body and soul.

My Review:

Excellent - I look forward to reading more of his books!

The story takes place in Elkwood, North Carolina.  When Julia was 4 years old, her dad disappeared.  She has some kind of scars on her stomach, and she thinks it was part of a satanic ritual.  She isn't sure how involved her dad would have been in this ritual. Also, Julia thinks she is being stalked by some kind of a creep.  She is going to counseling with Dr. Pamela Forrest to try to help her.  Dr. Forrest is trying to help Julia remember what happened to her when she was younger. It's really hard for Julia to go back to those memories, and she would rather just forget about them.  She is having weird dreams too.

There is another character in the story that is trying to help her, but she is warned to stay away from this person.  It's hard to know who she can really trust.  Not only does she see some kind of creep, but there is something weird going on with her digital clock and the blocks on the coffee table.

When reading this I could tell Scott Nicholson has a sense of humor.  Here is  a quote and you will see why:

"A Creep in a jeep? Sounded too much like Dr. Seuss to be dangerous.  Silly.  A coy boy with a toy, bark in the dark, a mental muddle puddle.  Still the adrenaline jolt tingled her nerves at a hundred amps and caused her fingers to twitch."  (Kindle loc. 113-114)

 I also liked this quote:

"A real man doesn't mind a little meat on the bone."  (Kindle loc. 782-83)

I read a lot of this book in the car on a family trip.  I went to a concert that night (Slayer/Rob Zombie!!).  When we got back to where we were staying at 1:00 a.m., I couldn't sleep so I tried to read more of this book.  My ears were ringing, so it was a little tough to concentrate.  Plus, it seemed like it was going to get really scary, and everyone else was sleeping.  I decided to put the book down until the next day.  It really didn't end up as scary as I thought it would be.  I know there was talk of creeps and everything, but it wasn't an overly scary book.

Overall, I enjoyed the book and was not sure who in the book could be trusted and who couldn't.   It was full of suspense and really kept me guessing.  I really look forward to reading more by Scott Nicholson!  The ending was totally unexpected too!

About the Book:
Ever have dreams that took your mind to places reality couldn't? Kristle wanted it all, money, power, and lavish possessions. But being a poor girl from the South side of Chicago, she had no idea how she was going to get it all. She busts her butt to get her finances to a generous amount using her dope girl skills when it is all whisked away on a whim. Kristle is left without a pot to piss in and has to regain her life back by fending for herself anyway she can. She finds a way to make some money and learns to live off civil means. But as things are starting to look up again they come tumbling back down with a house fire. Just as Kristle is about to give up she encounters a man that gives her a strange note. The note introduces her to an opportunity of a lifetime with a few stipulations. It's a game that needs to be played in a timely fashion or Kristle is a dead girl. If she successfully completes her task she gets more money than she's ever seen before in her life. What she doesn't know is that the tasks are not ordinary and the person making her play the game is someone she least expects.

About the Author:

D. Skies aka Shante Harris grew up on the south side of Chicago. At the age of 10 she began writing poems and short stories for her teachers. They encouraged her to submit some of her work into competitions. D. Skies was not able to do so because she had so many others things on her plate having to help care for her sisters and mother. She also learned to play the clarinet and alto saxophone at that time.

Soon after entering high school she became pregnant with her first daughter. Though D. Skies was faced with becoming a teenage mother she did not let that stop her. She finished high school and even went on to attend college at The International Academy of Design and Technology, without any help from her child’s father. She found comfort in teaching herself to play the acoustic guitar. In 2003, her daughter’s father tried to step up and become the father he should have started out being, but he was tragically murdered. After which D. Skies still pressed on to continue her studies.

After meeting up with some women whom she thought were her friends she came into some run-ins with the law which forced her to leave school. D. Skies fought her case and ultimately came out with 3 years probation. She decided that was her wake up call to get her life back on track. In 2005, she met her husband and in late 2006 they began dating. The following year they became pregnant with her second daughter. After giving birth she enrolled herself back into school attending Kennedy King College and joining the Honors Society Phi Theta Kappa. She began her writing again and this time it evolved into full-fledged novels. They then became pregnant with her third daughter in 2009. The couple then wedded in November 2009.

D. Skies graduated in December 2010 with an Associates of Arts degree with Honors and are now attending Chicago State University in pursuance of her Bachelors of Arts degree in TV and Film Making. She has recently finished her first book entitled, Derailed, which is due to debut in late Spring 2011. D. Skies plans to continue to write novels that are inspired from her upbringing and dreams. Her goal is to bring life to her writings by directing and producing them into movies. D. Skies’ motto is “A strong woman is not born, she is made.”

My Review:

Wow!!!  It's a page turner!

Kristle's life was doomed from the moment she was born.  Her mother Kenya was only 14 years old when she had her.  Kenya was a crackhead who seemed to only care about herself.  She would go out to find drugs and leave Kristle behind.   When Kristle got older, she began a business of her own.  She was doing very well for herself too, but then something happened and she was back to square one.  She wanted to find the woman known as the First Lady.  It was supposed to have been a rumor, but she wanted to think she was real.  She wanted to be as powerful and successful as the First Lady was supposed to be!  Eventually, Kristle got a note.  It was a game she had to play.  One wrong move, and she would die.

What I liked:

The Characters - Kristle and Kenya was unforgettable!

The chapter titles - I would find that I would start reading the chapter then flip back to the first page of the chapter to look at the title again because it gave a little bit of an indication on what was going to happen.

The game that Kristle had to play -   I got hooked and couldn't wait to see what would happen.

The concept of the First Lady - I kept wondering who the First Lady was and if she was real!

What could be improved:

There were some some spelling errors and wrong use of words.   Also, when someone spoke in a quote it was in one paragraph, and the next paragraph would be the rest of the sentence after the quote.   It seemed like it should have been all in one paragraph separated by a comma.

Overall:

I thought this was a great first book by D. Skies!  I enjoyed reading Derailed!  It kept me wanting to know what was going to happen next! Kenya and Kristle are characters that I won't forget!  I wonder now if there will be a second book.  I was left wondering who is was at the end!   I highly recommend this book!

Book Review - Wikked by L.M. Blakely

Wikked by L.M. Blakely

Published November 30th 2010 by PHE Ink - Writing Solutions Firm (first published March 26th 2008)

2K11 Reading/Reviewing Challenge - 2nd Quarter - My Challenge book 9 of 13

About the Author:
LMBlakely is a native of Albany, Georgia – a “military brat” who has traveled and resided in the Philippines, Okinawa, Japan, New Mexico and Florida. She currently lives in Atlanta, GA and is studying for her Bachelors in Network Management.

She found inspiration in writing by journaling and playing different instruments, composite ballads and had aspirations of being a songwriter blossomed until her passion changed which resulted in her earning the title of “Author.”

Ms. Blakely is a thirty-something writer, on a writing marathon.
About the Book:
Niqi Brown seems to have it all - she's the Executive Director at a lucrative manufacturing firm and engaged to one of the wealthiest and most handsome brothas around, Chancelor Barnes IV. Truth be told, even paradise has its trouble spots.

As it turns out, Niqi and Chance's relationship has been steadily eroding over the years, devolving to the point where they can barely see eye-to-eye on any issue. They spend less time together, they argue more frequently, and, quite frankly, they make each other miserable. So, it comes as no surprise that Niqi's suspicions are confirmed when she confronts Chance about his secret dealings with none other than Tiffany Jones, a bitter rival from her past who has re-emerged on the scene with Niqi square in her sights.  Amid the drama and chaos that ensue, Niqi eventually finds comfort in the arms of the smooth and sexy Denim Alexander, who just so happens to be the best lover she's ever had.

However, all that glitters is not gold, and Niqi soon finds herself caught up in the middle of a sinister plot involving various levels of treachery, deceit, and backstabbing, thrusting her into survival mode with none other than her very own life at stake.

My Review:
Niqi wants to be able to talk to her fiancee Chance, but he never seems to want to talk to her unless he starts the conversation.  Their life in the bedroom is stale and he always seems to be working or on business trips.  She sees this guy named Denim who is so HOT, but she is engaged and doesn't want to complicate her life.

Then Tiffany comes along.  She seems to be trying to meddle in their lives.  Whenever she brings Tiffany's name up in coversation with Chance, he doesn't want to talk about it.  She just thinks something is fishy about it.

This would have almost been a perfect book if it weren't for a few things.  First of all, the book is written in first person with Niqi telling the story.  Sometimes though it switches to third person even in the same sentence.  I've never written a book, so I know it has to be hard to keep everything straight sometimes.  Also, when characters are talking, it was hard sometimes to differentiate who was talking when there were two quotes within a sentence.  Other than that, it was perfect!

I loved this book, and L.M. Blakely did an awesome job with it.  The characters came to life for me.  I didn't have any trouble remembering who was who.  Sometimes authors can overload you and introduce so many people that you can't keep them straight, but that was not the case here at all!  There was always some kind of drama going on, and I never knew what to expect next!  I love a book like this that you can't predict what is going to happen or how it's going to end!  I highly recommend this one!

My Rating:
4/5 Diamonds - Loved It!

Book Review - Flesh and Bones by Paul Levine

Publication Date: April 11, 2011
Format: E-book
Source:  Pump Up Your Book

About the Author:

The author of 14 novels, Paul Levine won the John D. MacDonald fiction award and was nominated for the Edgar, Macavity, International Thriller, and James Thurber prizes. A former trial lawyer, he also wrote more than 20 episodes of the CBS military drama “JAG.” He is also the author of the “Solomon vs. Lord” series and the thriller “Illegal.” His next book will be “Lassiter,” due in Fall 2011 from Bantam. (Source: Goodreads)

About the Book:
“I was sitting at the end of the bar sipping single-malt Scotch when I spotted the tall blond woman with the large green eyes and the small gray gun.”

The next thing Jake Lassiter knows, the woman pumps three bullets into the man on the next barstool.

And Jake, the linebacker-turned-lawyer, has a new client.

She’s stunning model Chrissy Bernhardt, and the dead man is her wealthy father. The defense? Chrissy claims that she’s recently recovered repressed memories of having been sexually abused by her father. Jake wants to believe her but suspects that the memories were either implanted by a shady psychiatrist or fabricated by Chrissy herself. Complicating the situation, Jake falls for his client, clouding his judgment. Is she an anguished victim or a cold-blooded killer? And what about her brother, who stands to inherit a fortune if Chrissy goes to prison? Jake wades into a quagmire of dirty water deals, big money, and family corruption, all leading to an explosive finale.

My Review:

The book starts out with action from the beginning.  A model named Chrissy shot her father.  It just happens that Jake Lassiter (football player turned lawyer) was there to see it at the bar.

Take a journey into the life of Jake Lassiter as he tries to get to the bottom of this case.  He wants to find out  what made Chrissy kill her father. Why was she so angry at her father?  Jake visits Dr. Schein (Chrissy's doctor) to find out more about what is going on in Chrissy's life.  In the mist of the case, he starts to fall for Chrissy.

Flesh and Bones was definitely an enjoyable book. It was a legal thriller that also had humor mixed in to keep me entertained!  Paul Levine definitely is an author that I will keep an eye on!

My Rating:

4/5 diamonds -  Great Legal Thriller! - Recommend!

About Revelations

Revelations
The small, upscale Colorado town of Midas had barely registered on Sergeant Detective Jane Perry’s radar before her former boss and current colleague told her she needed to join him there for a case. All she knew was that it was a long way from Denver — both in terms of physical distance and sensibility. Jacob Van Gorden, the fifteen-year-old son of a prominent area businessman, has disappeared, and all signs point to his abductor being Jordan Copeland, a man who committed a similar crime decades ago. There are indications that Jacob is still alive, so the clock is ticking, but as Jane investigates Copeland, she begins to have doubts about his guilt. And at the same time, she begins to uncover trails of devastating – and even deadly – secrets all around Midas.
Meanwhile, Jane must deal with two considerable secrets of her own. One hits her like a left cross before she leaves Denver, and the other creeps up on her from the most unlikely of places. On top of this, Hank Ross, owner of a bar in Midas, has somehow managed to find a way beneath Jane’s armor-plated defenses, forcing her to contend with feelings she hasn’t allowed to surface for a very long time.
Revelations is the most powerful and personal Jane Perry novel yet. Teeming with the passions and ambiguities that make Laurel Dewey so compelling to read, it is a breathtaking story of mysteries revealed and withheld.

My Review:
This is the second book that I have read by Laurel Dewey.  I have definitely seen growth in her writing!

Sergeant Detective Jane Perry is at it again.  This time she is trying to solve the case of a boy, Jake Van Gorden, who was attempting suicide, but then got kidnapped in the process. Something just seemed strange about that.  Clues are being sent to the boy's family and the police about the boy's disappearance.  Jane is thinking it's the boy who is setting the whole thing up and he is trying to get some money out of his parents, but there are not any ransom requests.

I love Jane Perry.  She doesn't hold anything back.  She tells things like they are and is not afraid at all to speak her mind.  She gets these weird feelings that seem to lead her to things that might give her clues.  Also, she smells things (like flowers) that seem real, but then they go away.  I love the mystical part of Jane Perry!  She does have a secret about herself though that nobody knows.

I like this quote from Jane:
"It's the little things, you know?  People are always looking at the elephant in the room and I'm always looking at the peanut." p.36

I was very surprised about who the kidnapper was and the reason for the kidnapping.  There were also some other surprises at the end!

I recommend this mystery book for sure!  It is quite a long read, but very good! Laurel Dewey is definitely an author to read if you like a good mystery with interesting characters!

My Rating:

4/5 diamonds -  Great Mystery! - Recommend!
